Jack Daniel was probably born in Lynchburg in 1846 as the tenth child of Calaway and Lucinda Daniel. His exact date of birth is disputed; the information varies from 1846 through 1848 up to 1850. On Daniel's tombstone the year 1850 is given as the year of birth, but since his mother died in 1847, the date of birth 1846 is most likely. The Jack Daniel's company, citing 1850 as Daniel's year of birth, produced a special edition of the whiskey in 2000 on the occasion of his 150th birthday.

After his mother's untimely death, he was raised by Dan Call, who also taught him how to make whiskey . In September 1863 Call sold the distillery to Daniel. In 1866, Jack Daniel's was the first distillery to be included in the US commercial register . Since Daniel never married and had no children, he passed the business on to his nephew Lem Motlow in 1907 .

Daniel died on October 10, 1911 of blood poisoning , probably from an infection in his injured foot. Legend has it that Daniel went to work one morning and couldn't remember the combination of numbers in his safe. He kicked the safe in anger and injured his toe in the process. His last words are said to have been "One last drink, please".
