Jack Howells , born Thomas John Howells (* 2. July 1913 in Abertysswg , Wales , † 6. September 1990 in Penarth , South Glamorgan , Wales, United Kingdom ) was a Welsh teacher with a few trips to the Documentary - Director and Oscar -Award winner.

Live and act

Howells had worked as a teacher in his Welsh homeland for many years and during this time developed a great interest in topics of his country that could be processed by documentary film. He began shortly after the end of World War II as an assistant director on the educational film Apples From Your Garden , which James Hill directed in 1946 with the backing of the British Department of Agriculture. Since the beginning of the 1950s Howells wrote the manuscripts for a series of mostly short informational and documentary films, since 1952 he has also often directed. With the script for the drama Front Page Story , Howells delivered a movie with a game plot for the first time a year later.

In 1961 Howells shot his most important work, the half-hour documentary Dylan Thomas , a tribute to the famous Welsh poet and poet of the same name , who was accompanied by Welsh screen star Richard Burton as commentator. At the 1963 Oscars , this film was awarded the Academy Prize in the “Best Documentary Short Film” category. Howells remained cinematically active until the early 1980s, most recently for Welsh television, but without being able to show another similar success.
