Jacob Baart de la Faille

Jacob-Baart de la Faille (born June 1, 1886 in Leeuwarden ; † August 7, 1959 , Heemstede ) was a Belgian-Dutch art historian and lawyer.

De la Faille was a son of the Dutchman Cornelis Baart de la Faille and the Belgian Henriette Adriana Krayenhoff. He studied law in Utrecht and received his doctorate in 1913.

De la Faille compiled the first catalog of Vincent van Gogh's works and published it for the first time in 1928. Shortly afterwards, de la Faille was involved in a spectacular dispute over the Berlin art dealer Otto Wacker (1898–1970) when he certified about 30 forgeries offered by Wacker as real works by van Gogh.

In addition to Jan Hulsker's newer Van Gogh catalog , de la Failles cataloging is still a standard work today. Its list is marked with the abbreviation "F" in image descriptions.
