Jacob Kjeldgaard

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jacob Kjeldgaard (born September 4, 1884 in Copenhagen , † 1964 in Paris ) was a Danish photographer and journalist who emigrated to France. He is known under the stage name "Marinus" above all for his satirical photo montages in the French pre-war weekly newspaper Marianne (1932–1940), comparable to those of John Heartfield .

Life

He was the fifth child of a Danish master craftsman in the capital. After primary school, he attended grammar school and the polytechnic school. His professional goal was an artist. In 1909 he emigrated to the French capital in order to be able to realize himself more effectively.

His collages were inspired by classical masterpieces ( Leonardo da Vinci , Breughel , Eugène Delacroix , Auguste Rodin ...) and by the cinema ( King Kong , Ben Hur , ...). The main targets of his pacifist-political photo montages were Hitler and Stalin . One often meets Benito Mussolini , Hermann Göring , Joseph Goebbels , Theodore Roosevelt , Chamberlain , Daladier .

Only because he hid himself under the pseudonym "Marinus" and consistently acted in the background, Kjeldgaard was able to survive the German occupation.

The Danish public only found out about his work through an exhibition at the Nordjyllands Kunstmuseum Aalborg in late 2007 . The photographic collections in the Museum Ludwig in Cologne showed a retrospective of his works from August 8 to October 19, 2008 under the title “Hitler blind and Stalin lame”.

His works are now also playing a role on the art market. A permanent reminder web presence has been set up under his name in his hometown of Copenhagen. However, this is only available in Danish (2009).
