Jacob "Jake" Schaefer senior (born February 2, 1855 in Milwaukee , † March 8, 1910 in Denver ), also called "The Wizard", was a German-born carom player in the USA.

Private

Jake Sen. was the first son of German emigrants born in the USA. He had a brother named Charles, was married and had a daughter and a son (Jake Jun.) With his wife. He learned to play pool early in his father's pool room.

Because of his "heroic deeds" with the cue, he was nicknamed "The Wizzard". He was quite short in stature, no taller than 1.65 m (5'-5 "), but was viewed by his fellow players as a" giant "at the table.

Schaefer (I), born in 1855, was the father of the equally successful billiard player Jacob Schaefer junior (1894–1975).

Both Schaefer Jun. (II) and his arch-rival Willie Hoppe were tutored by him.

Schaefer became seriously ill with tuberculosis in 1908 , which is why he moved from Chicago to Denver because of the milder climate . There he died on the afternoon of March 8, 1910 at the age of 55. His wife, his children and his brother Charles sat at his deathbed.

Jacob Schaefer III (* 1938) and Jacob Schaefer IV (* 1970) are both scientists. Jacob Schaefer V (* 2007) has not yet made a professional decision.

Career

His strength lay particularly in the free game and in the cadre . He was the strongest and most popular American billiards player of the 19th century. In 1968 he was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Billiard Congress of America .

With Willie Hoppe he went on several tours in 1903 and 1905 to carry out exhibition fights. Hoppe once described him with the words:

"Schaefer was the master of the carom game of billiards, with the most delicate stroke in the world, using either hand, he would execute a difficult mass shot that would bring an applauding audience to their feet."

"Schaefer was the master of the carom-billiards, with the well zartesten impact in the world, two-handed playing, he would have a difficult Massé run -Stoß that would bring the applauding audience on its feet."

- Willie Hoppe : Billiards Digest

The exact number of his game and tournament victories in the free game and in the cadre is not known. His World Cup years in 1879, 1883, 1898, 1901, 1902, 1907 and 1908 are well known. It would have been even more if he hadn't had a car accident in Chicago that shattered his wrist and caused him considerable problems in recent years prepared at the game.

In his day he was one of the world's best players in the free game and cadre. In order to combat his playful superiority, various new Cadre variants were invented, but this did not help to oust him from the top. He won titles and fans worldwide. Although already seriously ill, he won his last world title on March 11, 1908 at the Cadre 45/1 World Championship against Hoppe with 500: 423.
