Live and act

Jacob de Bondt is a son of the Dutch doctor Gerard de Bondt . He studied in Leiden and acquired the title of Doctor of Medicine in 1614. In 1627 he went to Jakarta (then Batavia) as an envoy for the Dutch East India Company .

His work De Medicina Indorum , published posthumously in 1642, is the first important treatise on the diseases of East India. It contains the first modern descriptions of cholera , the tropical dysentery , the yaws and beriberi .

Together with Willem Piso , he is considered to be one of the forerunners of tropical medicine.

In 1657, the therapeutic sticking of needles was first mentioned in the West by Jacob de Bondt. The term acupuncture was introduced by Willem ten Rhijne a few years later .

Charles Plumier named the genus Bontia of the fig family of plants (Scrophulariaceae) in his honor . Carl von Linné later took over this name.
