Gerard Bontius (also: Geraert de Bondt, Gerardus de Bont ; * to 1536 /1539 Rijswijk ; † 15. September 1599 in Leiden ) was a Dutch physician, botanist, mathematician and astronomer.

Life

The son of a wealthy father received private lessons in Schoonhoven and Delft in basic philosophical subjects and the Latin language. Then he began studying medical sciences at the University of Leuven , traveled to Italy and continued his studies at the University of Padua , where he received his doctorate in medicine. After returning to his native Netherlands, he settled in Leiden as a doctor and became the first professor of medicine, mathematics and astronomy on July 17, 1575 when the University of Leiden was founded here in 1575 . In September 1587 he took over the professorship of herbalism and anatomy and on October 10, 1598 became head of the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden.

The scientist, known for his extensive knowledge, was famous for his knowledge of the Greek language and gave lectures on Hippocrates . In addition, Bontius also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leiden University and was elected Rector of the Alma Mater in 1582/83 and 1599 . However, he died in his last term of office. No publications by him have been put into print. In addition, he had decreed that after his death nothing of his manuscripts could be printed.

From his marriage to Jacoba Jans there are four sons and four daughters. Of these, the sons Reiner Bontius (1576–1623), Willem Bontius (1588–1646) and Jacob de Bondt also achieved some fame. The son Jan Bontius became a doctor in Rotterdam.
