Jacqueline Noonan

Jacqueline Anne Noonan (born October 28, 1928 in Burlington , Vermont ; † July 23, 2020 ) was an American pediatric cardiologist , best known for characterizing a genetic disease that is now known as Noonan's syndrome . She was also the first to describe hypoplastic left heart syndrome .

Life

Noonan studied chemistry at Albertus Magnus College and medicine at the University of Vermont . From 1956 she worked at the University of Iowa . In 1961, Noonan moved to the University of Kentucky Medical School , where she served for over forty years. As the first pediatric cardiologist, she found that children with a rare type of heart defect, called pulmonary valve stenosis , often had a characteristic physical appearance with small stature, pterygium colli , wide-set eyes and low-set ears. She presented her first paper on the subject in 1962, and after several additional work and recognition, the condition was officially referred to as Noonan's syndrome in 1971 . An endowed chair for pediatric research was established in her name. She died on July 23, 2020 at the age of 91.
