Jacques Charpentier (born October 18, 1933 in Paris , † June 15, 2017 in Lézignan-Corbières ) was a French composer and organist .

Career

Charpentier took piano lessons in his youth and studied traditional Indian music in Bombay and Calcutta from 1953–54 . On his return to France he studied at the Conservatoire de Paris as a student of Tony Aubin and Olivier Messiaen . In 1957 he began a series of compositions for piano on the 72 modes of Carnatic music , which when completed in 1984 comprised twelve volumes.

In 1966, André Malraux appointed him General Inspector for Music at the French State Ministry of Culture. He held this position until 1981. In addition to his administrative tasks , Charpentier composed around 150 works, including Béatris de Planissolas, the first opera in Occitan in 1971 , and worked as an organist.
