After his return to the archipelago, he began to work as a teacher in Capesterre-Belle-Eau and expressed his interest in the association, whereupon he became president of the sporting-cultural association Aigle.

Furthermore, since 1978 he has campaigned for the establishment of an electro-technical branch at the Hyacinthe-Bastaraud high school in Grand-Bourg on Marie-Galante . Since his return to Guadeloupe , the local community has also encouraged him to take part in local elections.

Political career

mayor

Although he was still working as a teacher in Guadeloupe, in 2001 an increasing number of residents of the city of Saint-Louis approached Jacques Cornano with the request to present an opposition list regarding the local elections. He finally won the victory against his predecessor François Paméole, who had been in office since 1983, and has since been mayor of Saint-Louis de Marie-Galante .

During his first term in office, he achieved his stated goal of reducing the community's debt. He began his second term on March 16, 2008. In 2014 Cornano was re-elected for the third time, this time in the first ballot.

Councilor and Deputy to Rep. Eric Jalton

In the parliamentary elections in 2002, Cornano took over the post of deputy from Eric Jalton when he was elected MP for the first district of Guadeloupe. He took office again when Yalton was re-elected in 2007. As a result of his election as mayor of Saint-Louis, Jacques Cornano also became a councilor for the Saint-Louis district. In 2008 he was re-elected to this office. He held the position until 2011 when he was elected Senator.

senator

In 2011 Jacques Cornano took part in the Senate elections and was elected Senator of Guadeloupes under the label Divers Gauche (with 53.65% of the vote in the second ballot), as did his colleagues Jacques Gillot and Félix Desplan.

His Caribbean roots mean that Jacques Cornano's attention is particularly drawn to issues related to the islands. The question of equity in the context of the principle of territorial currency for the South Islands ( Marie-Galante , la Désirade and Les Saintes ), for example, is an issue that is very important to him and which he is strongly committed to.

As part of his work as Senator, Jacques Cornano is also a member of the delegation for the French overseas departments and of the Commission for the Sustainable Development of Infrastructures, Capital Goods and Regional Planning.

Since the beginning of 2015, he has also been the speaker of the working group “les Outre-Mer confrontés au changement climatique” as part of the preparations for the 21st Climate Conference of the Contracting Parties (COP21) .
