Jacques Eberhard

Jacques Eberhard (born May 25, 1919 in Le Havre , Seine-Inférieure department , † July 28, 2009 in Montivilliers , Seine-Maritime department) was a French politician ( FKP ). He was mayor of Gonfreville-l'Orcher , home to the largest oil refinery in France, and a member of the Senate .

Life

Eberhard worked as a metal fitter at the aircraft manufacturer Bréguet Aviation in Harfleur . In the 1930s, Eberhard joined the CGT union , the Communist Youth Association and the French Communist Party (FKP).

During the Second World War he was arrested for refusing to do the Service du travail obligatoire in Germany. He was detained in a prison from which he later escaped. Eberhard joined the Resistance after his escape .

Jacques Eberhard was elected in 1946 as the youngest member of the municipal council of the town of Gonfreville-l'Orcher. From 1953 to 1978 he was mayor of Gonfreville-l'Orcher. From 1964 to 1982 he belonged to the canton of Montivilliers the General Council of the department of Seine-Maritime. From 1969 to 1986 he was a member of the Senate.

During his time as mayor, Gonfreville-l'Orcher developed into an industrial town. He campaigned for the construction of modern apartments, new schools and sports facilities. Having been in correspondence with the Teltow mayor Alfred Pape since 1964 , Eberhard visited Teltow in 1966 to sign a friendship treaty between the two cities.

  • A street ( avenue Jacques Eberhard ) and a primary school have been named after Eberhard in Gonfreville-l'Orcher since 2010 .
