Jacques Genest

Jacques Genest , CC (born May 29, 1919 in Montreal ; † January 5, 2018 there ) was a Canadian medic .

Genest studied medicine at the University of Montreal with an MD degree. He was a post-doctoral student at Harvard University and did clinical research at Johns Hopkins University and the Rockefeller Institute. He then went back to Canada, where he founded and directed the Clinical Research Institute in Montreal. In 1964 he became director of the Medical School in Montreal.

Genest was recognized as the leading researcher into high blood pressure in Canada, particularly investigating the role of kidneys, the interactions of sodium, aldosterone , angiotensin and renin .

In 1963 he received the Canada Gairdner International Award . He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and received its Flavelle Medal in 1968. In 1967 he became Companion of the Order of Canada and in 1991 Grand Officer of the National Order of Quebec. In 1994 he was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame .
