Jacques Jessel

Jacques Jessel (* 1920 ) is a French ambassador and politician.

biography

After finishing his school career, Jessel decided to do a voluntary social year in 1944 . A year later he completed his studies at the École Militaire Inter-Armes (EMIA) in Coëtquidan in Brittany .

He began his diplomatic career in 1953 when he was accredited for one year at the Consulate General of France in Brussels . In 1956 he moved to Hamburg, where he held the post of attaché in the consulate . From 1958 he received further training for the next two years at the École Nationale d'Administration (ENA). He continued his diplomatic career in 1961 by becoming the embassy secretary in Bonn and holding this position until 1965. In the late 1960s he moved to the United States as Embassy Secretary in Washington . From 1974 he worked again in German-speaking countries, as he was counselor in East Berlin until 1977. From 1977 to 1982 he was Deputy Permanent Representative of the French Government to NATO in Brussels.

At the political level he was able to prevail in 1982 when he was appointed Deputy Minister of Defense, he held this office until 1985. In 1985 Jessel was appointed representative of the French government at the disarmament conference in Geneva .

In 1990 he headed the French delegation to negotiate the Open Skies Treaty in Ottawa and Budapest .
