Ernest Germain de Saint-Pierre

Jacques Nicolas Ernest Germain de Saint-Pierre , actually Ernest Germain , (born December 7, 1814 in Saint-Pierre-le-Moûtier , † June 27, 1882 in Hyères ) was a French doctor and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Germ. "

Live and act

As a botanist he was a student of Achille Richard , the botany professor at the Medical Faculty in Paris. With Ernest Cosson he published a flora around Paris.

In 1854 he was one of the fifteen founding members of the Société botanique de France and its president. (1870/71). He was a member of the Société philomathique and the Société de biologie.

His name was originally Germain, but later named after his place of residence in Hyères, the neo-Gothic country house and castle Saint-Pierre-des-Horts, or Germain de Saint-Pierre, where he was born.

Honors

The plant genus Diserneston Jaub is named after "Ernest Germain" and "Ernest Cosson" ("les deux Ernest") . & Spach from the umbelliferae family (Apiaceae). The genus Germainia Balansa & Poitr. in contrast, from the sweet grass family (Poaceae) is not named after him, but after Rodolphe Germain, a French veterinarian (1827-1917).
