Jacques Revel

Jacques Revel (* 1942 in Avignon ) is a French modern historian from the Annales School . During his academic career, he worked at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in Paris .

Life

Revel attended the Lycée Louis-le-Grand and studied from 1963 at the elite university École normal superieure with the degree of agrégation in history in 1968. He then went to the École française de Rome and taught at the Sorbonne, the École Normale Superieure and finally to of the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), of which he was director from 1995 to 2004.

He deals with social and cultural history of the early modern period in Europe and especially in Italy. He also deals with historiography and methodology of the science of history and introduced the Italian microhistory current to France .
