Jean-Claude Passeron

Jean-Claude Passeron (born November 26, 1930 in Nice ) is a French sociologist . Before retiring, he was director of the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Marseille . In German-speaking countries, Passeron became known for his research on the sociology of education , which he carried out together with Pierre Bourdieu .

Life

Passeron graduated from an École normal supérieure , graduated from the Agrégation for Philosophy in 1958 and turned to sociology since 1960 . After working as an assistant at the Sorbonne and teaching at the University of Nantes , Passeron was involved in the founding of the reform university Vincennes (Paris VIII), where he also became a lecturer. He then worked as research director at the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), where he worked with Bourdieu. The best-known result of the joint work was first published in German-speaking countries in 1971 under the title The Illusion of Equal Opportunities .

Passeron later moved back to Nantes , where he worked as a department head at a research institute and received his habilitation in 1980 . Soon afterwards he moved to EHESS in Marseille, whose director he eventually became. Even after the separation from Bourdieu, the sociology of education remained, in addition to the sociology of culture , a focus of Passeron.
