William Raymond "Bill" Muckalt (born July 15, 1974 in Surrey , British Columbia ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player , current coach and official who played 261 games for the Vancouver Canucks , New York Islanders , Ottawa Senators and Minnesota Wild played in the National Hockey League on the right winger position .
Career
Muckalt was active between 1991 and 1994 in the British Columbia Junior Hockey League for the Merritt Centennials and for a short period the Kelowna Spartans. During this period he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1994 in the ninth round in 221st place by the Vancouver Canucks from the National Hockey League . Instead of switching to a professional career, however, the 20-year-old decided to study at the University of Michigan . At the same time he played for their ice hockey program in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association , a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and won the national college championships in 1996 and 1998.
For the 1998/99 season , the striker finally moved into the professional field. Right away, the rookie earned a regular place in the NHL roster of the Vancouver Canucks. He finished the season with 36 points scorer in 73 games - a mark that he should not reach in the further course of his career. The following game year was marked by a transfer and an injury. In December 1999 he was given together with Dave Scatchard and Kevin Weekes for goalkeeper Félix Potvin and voting rights for the second and third round in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft to the New York Islanders . By the end of the season, Muckalt only played twelve games for New York, as a shoulder injury suffered in January 2000 ended his season early. In the following season he completed 60 encounters for the Islanders, before he transferred to the Ottawa Senators in June 2001 with Zdeno Chára and a first-round vote in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft 2001 , who sent Alexei Jashin to Long Island for it .
In Ottawa, the striker was able to play 70 games during the 2001/02 season , but posted only eight assists , whereupon his expiring contract was not extended. Muckalt therefore signed a contract with the Minnesota Wild as a free agent in the summer of 2002 . There he started very successfully with eight points in the first eight games, before another shoulder injury let him fail until the start of the play-offs . In the 2003/04 season he tried again with the Wild Farm Team Houston Eros to make a comeback. Ultimately, however, the shoulder injury prevented a successful continuation of his career, so that Muckalt resigned at the age of 30.
Following his playing career, Muckalt began to work in lower-class leagues as a head and assistant coach from 2006. In the 2010/11 season he coached the New Mexico Mustangs from the North American Hockey League . He then worked for four years as an assistant coach in the ice hockey program at Michigan Technological University . Since the beginning of the 2015/16 season he has been head coach and general manager of Tri-City Storm from the United States Hockey League .
