Jacques Thomas Astesan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jacques Thomas Astesan OP (born July 11, 1724 in Chambéry , † January 11, 1783 in Oristano ) was a Savoyard Dominican , bishop and archbishop.

life and work

Astesan was the son of a high-ranking Savoyard civil servant. He became a Dominican and ordained a priest in 1748. From 1764 to 1778 he was Bishop of Nice . As such he lived a modest way of life, but turned the population against him for three reasons. As a Dominican he rejected the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception of Mary , harshly expelled the Jesuits (repealed by the Pope) in 1773 and wanted to prevent the construction of a theater. He moved to the less popular seat of the Archbishop of Oristano in Sardinia and died there in 1783 at the age of 58.
