Jaime Sabartés (born June 10, 1881 in Barcelona , † February 16, 1968 in Paris ), Catalan : Jaume Sabartés i Gual , was a Spanish / Catalan sculptor , poet and writer . As a lifelong friend and private secretary of Pablo Picasso , he published several works on Picasso, such as the biography Picasso: Toreros (1961).

Life

Sabartés studied at the La Llotja Art Academy in Barcelona and with the sculptor Manel Fuxà . In 1901 he exhibited works for the first time in the renowned Sala Parés gallery . In addition, he worked for the magazine Joventut ("Jugend"), where he published articles and poems under the pseudonym Jacobus Sabartés . At the end of 1899 he met Picasso in the artist café and cabaret " Els Quatre Gats " in Barcelona and became one of his closest friends.

In 1904 Sabartés went to Guatemala , where he wrote for the newspaper Diario de Centro América (Central America's Diary) and other newspapers and later became a teacher at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes (National School of Fine Arts) in Guatemala City . He was actively involved in the literary and artistic life of the country and was considered a close observer of the political and social situation in Central America.

After 23 years, Sabartés returned to Catalonia in 1927. In 1935 he moved to Paris , where he became Picasso's private secretary and published a number of works on the artist. Picasso in turn created several portraits of Sabartés. A large part of the Picasso works in the Picasso Museum in Barcelona is a gift from Sabartés, who donated 574 works to the city in 1963. In 1970 Picasso added another 1,000 works to the collection, as suggested by Sabartés.

In 2007 the city of Barcelona named a newly designed square behind the Museu Picasso “Plaça de Jaume Sabartés”.

The following year, the Museu Picasso opened a new Sabartés room showing the new acquisition of a portrait painted by Picasso: Sabartés as a Faun from 1946.
