from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Jakob Bürgi (born October 17, 1737 (baptism date) in Waldshut , † March 29, 1795 in Mainz ) was a German painter and art publisher in Switzerland .

Life

Jakob Bürgi was born on October 17, 1737 in the western Austrian town of Waldshut as the son of a rope maker . The previously assumed year of birth 1745 goes back to an incorrect recalculation by Johann Georg Meusel . Jakob Bürgi, who lost his father at the age of 9, first learned the craft of a surgeon. As early as the beginning of the 1760s, Jakob Bürgi switched to the production of landscape gouaches in quarto or octave format . After Meusel, Jakob Bürgi also worked with sepia and black ink .

In the early 1770s, Jakob Bürgi also worked as a surgeon and painter in Mainz . Around 1780 he finally moved to Mainz and was accepted into the Electoral Painting Academy founded there in 1757 . Jakob Bürgi often sold his works to educational travelers on the Grand Tour . His work was in great demand in England and France . Therefore, his works are rarely represented in German collections.

In 1789 Jakob Bürgi moved to Bern and took over the Fehr'sche Kunsthandlung there . Under the imprint J. or JJ. Burgi, he published landscape etchings and engravings by the so-called Swiss Kleinmeister . Jakob Bürgi died in Mainz in 1795.
