life and work

Basset horn in F from the Grundmann workshop, 1787.

Grundmann learned his craft like Karl Augustin Grenser from Johann Poerschmann in Leipzig . In 1753 he returned to Dresden, where he opened his own instrument making workshop. His instruments were considered particularly beautiful in their time and were valued for their bright and round tone as well as their easy response. His oboes , bassoons and clarinets in particular were exported to Poland and Russia and used there until the 19th century.

After his death in 1800, his student Johann Friedrich Floth took over the workshop.

Seven basset horns and over 50 oboes from Grundmann have survived , including the first oboe with three keys from 1781.
