Jakob Kesselhut (* unknown in Seeheim ; † January 6, 1610 in Darmstadt ) was a German stonemason and master builder .

Life

Jakob Kesselhut probably came from Seeheim an der Bergstrasse. It was first mentioned in 1558. At that time he was working as a stonemason in the construction of the Darmstadt Palace . In 1569 he became court architect under Landgrave Georg I (1547–1596). From 1577 to 1581 he was also the landgrave's construction clerk.

As court architect, he erected a number of representative buildings for the family of George I. These include Lichtenberg Castle (1570–1581), a pleasure house in the Herrngarten (1572/73), which was built to house his wife, Countess Magdalene zur Lippe. In addition, a hunting yard (1574/75) and the Kranichstein hunting lodge near Darmstadt were built. From 1578 to 1580, Jakob Kesselhut converted the former Kranichrod estate near Kranichstein into a princely hunting lodge.

As early as 1574, Kesselhut was responsible for the expansion and renovation of the Bessung church . The cost was 2000 guilders.

Landgrave Georg I transferred the building authority to the court carpenter Jakob Wustmann in 1582 and took over Kesselhut in general administration. During this time, Kesselhut was initially responsible for the estate in Kranichstein, and from 1590 onwards for the Darmstadt winery .

From 1595 onwards, Kesselhut built a three-storey corner building in Darmstadt's palace, the so-called church and imperial hall building, on behalf of the landgrave. The client did not live to see the completion of this building in 1597. From 1598/99 onwards, Kesselhut worked on the Darmstadt town hall, which was completed in 1601.

Honors

In 1967 a street in Darmstadt-Kranichstein was named after him: Kesselhutweg
