Jakob Modern
Jakob Modern (born June 20, 1838 in Preßburg ; died September 9, 1912 in Vienna ) was an Austrian architect.
Life
Jakob Modern was born into a Jewish family of a kk wine supplier. After compulsory school he attended the Polytechnic in Vienna , which he graduated after four years. He then studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with August Sicard von Sicardsburg and then with Friedrich von Schmidt .
In 1868, Modern joined the Allgemeine Österreichische Baugesellschaft , where he worked as a construction manager for the construction of large city hotels and extensive factories.
In 1874 Modern became independent and built houses, villas and factories in Vienna and in the countryside. He was also known as an architect of synagogues.
Realizations
- 1868/1870 Great Synagogue (Győr) , preserved as a conference and cultural center
- 1888/1889 Währinger Tempel , destroyed in 1938
- 1889 Gänserndorf synagogue belonging to the Gänserndorf Jewish Community , later expanded to include a rabbi's house on the side of the courtyard, owned by the Gänserndorf municipality , threatened with demolition for parking spaces
