Jakobine Maurer

Jakobine Maurer (born June 1841 or 1842 in Novo Hamburgo ; † August 2, 1874 in Sapiranga ) was a German-Brazilian sect leader . As the head of the Mucker , she gained national fame , especially through the Mucker uprising of 1873/74.

Life

Jakobine Maurer was born in June 1841 or 1842 as Jakobine Mentz, daughter of André Mentz and Maria Elisabeth Müller, in Novo Hamburgo . As members of the Anabaptists, they had moved from Germany to Brazil because of religious persecution .

In 1866 Jakobine married Johann Georg Maurer, who made a name for himself as a faith healer in São Leopoldo . From 1870 the couple began to build a sect-like cult around Jacobine in Sapiranga . Jacobine publicly declared she was the reincarnation of Christ and her prophecies proclaimed the Apocalypse . Although it was not particularly well educated, it quickly gained a considerable number of followers, drawn from all walks of life. The somnambulism Jacobine suffered from since childhood was cited as evidence of her supposed psychic abilities.

The followers of the Masons called themselves Mucker and displayed increasing militancy . Local residents who refused to join the muckers were violently fought and, on Jakobine's orders, some were brutally murdered. The local state authorities were no longer able to bring the Mucker uprising under control, which is why the military had to be used to crush the fanatics. On August 2, 1874, Jacobine, bitterly defended by her supporters to the end, was killed by Brazilian soldiers in a forest near Sapiranga .
