Yakov Protazanov ( Russian Яков Александрович Протазанов ., Scientific transliteration Jakov Aleksandrovich Protazanov * January 23 . Jul / 4. February  1881 . Greg in Moscow ; † 9. August 1945 ) was a Russian - Soviet film director .

Life

He was one of the pioneers of Russian cinema. Protasanov began directing in 1909. He became known to an international audience with his masterpieces Pique Dame (1916) and Pater Sergius (1917), the latter staged together with Alexander Volkov . He is considered to be the discoverer of the actor Iwan Mosschuchin , with whom he produced numerous films.

In 1918 Protasanov first emigrated to France , but returned to the Soviet Union four years later . From 1924 he worked alongside Vsevolod Pudovkin for the newly founded Meschrabpom-Rus film company. His science fiction film Aelita (1924) is one of the few of its genre in early Soviet film. It impresses with its futuristic design.

Jakow Protasanow shot a total of over 70 films.
