The Tailor of Torzhok ( Russian : Закройщик из Торжка , English : The Tailor from Torzhok ) is a Soviet film comedy of director Yakov Protasanow . The film is a Mezhrabpom-Rus production from 1925 .

action

Petya Petelkin works during the time the New Economic Policy in the provincial town of Torzhok as a tailor in the dry goods store the widow Schirinkina. His employer makes repeated advances and wants to marry Petya. But this is secretly in love with Katja. Katja is beaten again and again by her employer, a shop owner and Nepmann .

When Schirinkina imposes on Petja the wedding and sends him to the jeweler to buy a "wedding present" - she wants to pretend to the guests that Petja is a "good match", he buys a lottery ticket at the train station from a desperate traveler who urgently needs money . His bride and the whole wedding party are stunned. After the following argument, Petya leaves the house that night, but he forgets the lot.

While Petya moves around as a seller with a vendor's tray in Moscow, the winnings are drawn. Also present are the ticket seller and her boyfriend, with whom Petya had already got into an argument. When the top prize of 100,000 rubles is announced, the saleswoman remembers the lot number with horror. And to Petya, who a few moments before was sitting next to her with his tray. She leaves her boyfriend and runs after Petya believing that he is now a rich man. During a party in the saleswoman's apartment, it becomes clear that Petya no longer has the lot. The friend takes possession of his address and visits the widow Schirinkina the next day. While she is being ensnared, Petya rushes into the house, he wants to get the forgotten lot.

But Schirinkina has long since given the lot to Katja’s employer, who in turn passed it on to Katja as wages. Petya is roughly pushed out of the house and meets Katja again. Unsuspecting, she goes to the lottery office with the lot and learns of her wealth. Now Katja and Petya are a couple, the tangles are over.

Production notes

The tailor from Torshok , like all films of the time, can be seen against the background of the political situation. Films quickly came under suspicion of “bourgeois decadence”, and not only had to meet the audience's taste in order to be economically successful, but a film also had to be politically desirable. Protasanov, who had returned from exile two years earlier, shot Aelita, an artistically demanding audience success in 1924 that fell victim to film criticism and later to Stalinist cultural policy. With his reputation , Protasanov brought out one of his films in February 1925, which was well received by audiences and politicians alike. Here Protasanov managed to make an entertaining and "politically correct" film. The Torshok Tailor was first performed on October 27, 1925. The film is one of those that the audience liked because it had a prominent leading actor in Igor Ilyinsky and took up real problems such as the housing shortage and the unscrupulousness of the haves, but it was politically intolerable.

criticism

The audience accepted The Tailor of Torshok well, and the film was already profitable two months after its release. The professional critics were much more cautious. The tailor from Torshok is only a mediocre comedy. The subplot of the mistreatment of Pyotr's true love Katja by her boyfriend, an unscrupulous Nepmann , is only poorly integrated and a concession to the requirement of the representation of "ideology". The film is only occasionally funny, and the role of the tailor seems "strange". In the political environment, Der Schneider von Torshok was accepted until the Soviet Cultural Revolution of the Five-Year Plan 1928–1932, Protasarov was still able to benefit from his success with his reputation . Subsequently, The Tailor of Torshok, along with Protasanov's films The Three Million Trial from 1926, The Waiter from the Palace Hotel (1927) and The White Eagle (1928), served as ammunition for attacks on the Meshrabpom-Rus production company .
