Jakow Stanislawowitsch Ewentow ( Russian Яков Станиславович Эвентов ; born August 31, 1906 , † 1989 ) was a Soviet geologist and chess official .

Life and work

Eventov was a long-time employee of the Moscow Institute of Petroleum Geology ( WNIGNI ). He dealt in particular with geochemistry , petroleum formation and exploration, plate tectonics and basin analysis. In 1945 he received his doctorate. He completed his habilitation in 1962 with the thesis "Geological construction, oil and natural gas management of the western and northern Caspi region" as a doctor of geological-mineralogical sciences. He was considered a connoisseur of the geology of the Caspian Depression and published more than 200 scientific publications.

Eventow showed an interest in chess as a child. In 1927 and 1928 he worked as a chess instructor in Homel . As a correspondence chess player , he took part in the semi-finals of the Soviet championship. With the Soviet team he played against Germany and Sweden. After emigrating to the United States in 1981, he played on the sixth board of the US team at the II North Atlantic Team Tournament.

Eventow was a board member and from 1957 chairman of the correspondence chess commission in the Soviet Chess Federation. In 1967 he received the title of International Arbiter from the ICCF . Between 1967 and 1975 he was Vice President of the ICCF, and from 1964 to 1980 he headed the Teleschess Commission. In 1979 he was named an ICCF Honorary Member . At the ICCF meeting in Pula in 1984 he received the Bertl von Massow medal in gold and silver.
