Jamba is a city in Angola , in the extreme southeast, immediately north of the Namibian border, near the Caprivi Strip . In Umbundu , the local language, Jamba means elephant, the city name refers to the elephant wealth of the area. A city with the same name is located in the province of Huíla (see Jamba (Huíla) ).
history
During the civil war in Angola (1975-2002), Jamba was the headquarters of UNITA from 1976 to 1992 . This was secured against access by the Angolan government troops by security systems (radar, anti-aircraft missiles, minefields, camouflage) .
In connection with the government offensive in 1999/2000, the majority of the population fled to Zambia, particularly to the Nangweshi refugee camp.
