James Ashton (polo player)

James William Ashton (born January 1941 in Australia , † February 14, 2010 in Pattaya , Thailand ) was an Australian polo player .

Ashton comes from a family devoted to polo since 1930. His father, James Ashton Sr., and his three uncles took the ship to England to try and beat Britain's top polo players as underdogs. Ashton represented Australia at two world polo championships. On November 23, 2009, at the FIP general meeting in Buenos Aires , he took over the interim presidency of the World Polo Association as successor to Patrick Guerrand-Hermès. He was instrumental in organizing the Polo World Cup in Melbourne in 2001 and helped the late media tycoon Kerry Packer to plan polo events. He was also involved in the aid organization Ronals McDonald House and Riding for the Disabled .

On February 14, 2010, James Ashton died after falling during a polo match in Bangkok , Thailand .

In 1966 he married Susan Kirkby, with whom he had twin sons Jamie and Andrew and three daughters. Jamie died in a traffic accident in 1994. The family owns the Millamolong Polo Club west of Bathurst , the most famous polo club in Australia and one of the largest country clubs in the world. The facility, which has its own full-size polo field and clubhouse, hosts many national and international tournaments during the summer months. These include the Jamie Ashton Memorial Cup and the Will Ashton Memorial Ladies Tournament .
