Lajos Rovatkay (* 1933 in Budapest ) is a from Hungary originating harpsichordist , organist and professor in Hannover .

Life

Lajos Rovatkay, the son of an artist, received piano lessons from the age of six. In the early 1950s he studied the organ at the Bartók Conservatory in Budapest and during this time he was organist in the local Cistercian church. From 1954 to 1956 he studied organ with János Hammerschlag and musicology at the Franz Liszt Music Academy . During this time he was co-founder of a "Collegium Musicum" (instrumental and vocal), which developed little-known music from the 16th to 18th centuries.

At the end of November 1956, Rovatkay fled across the Austrian border to the west, stayed in Vienna for a few weeks and in Italy for a while. In March 1957 he received a scholarship to continue his studies in Germany. He received private organ lessons from the well-known Bach interpreter Helmut Walcha and attended the musicological faculty of the University of Frankfurt .

In 1962 he was appointed to teach harpsichord and organ at the Hanover University of Music . In 1963 he married the recorder player Siri Rovatkay-Sohns , daughter of the painter Kurt Sohns , who later also taught in Hanover. The eldest of the two sons, Adrian Rovatkay , studied modern and historical reed instruments and is a popular bassoon and dulcian player .

In 1975 Lajos Rovatkay was entrusted with the management of the early music studio at the university. The appointment as professor followed. He remained in this position until his retirement in 1998.

In 1981 Rovatkay founded the "Capella Agostino Steffani", with which he gave numerous concerts and recorded several CDs. He and the ensemble were invited to perform the opera Enrico Leone (Heinrich the Lion) by Agostino Steffani for the 300th anniversary of the Hanover Opera House .

As a soloist he recorded the Goldberg Variations by Bach, among others . In 2008 a recording of works for stick flute and piano from the Biedermeier period was released. Rovatkay also worked as an early music editor for various publishers.

In 1992 Lajos Rovatkay was awarded the Lower Saxony Prize.

Agostino Steffani project

In 2014, Lajos Rovatkay designed the “Forum Agostino Steffani” . It is a "continuing cultural project" in Hanover that is set up as a project that takes place every September. It should encompass “the entire spectrum of contemporary music and history communication” with concerts, multimedia and music-theatrical events, lectures, seminars, workshops and scientific interdisciplinary conferences.
