Live and act
Bergquist received his bachelor's degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1970 and his Ph.D. at the University of Colorado . He later went to NIST in Boulder .
Bergquist's main research areas are laser cooling and spectroscopy . In 2000 he and other colleagues at NIST demonstrated the first optical clock based on a single mercury atom cooled down by a laser. Berquist is considered one of the leading experts in the field of laser physics. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the National Academy of Sciences .
