James Carter (born May 7, 1978 in Baltimore ) is an American hurdler whose specialty is the 400 meter hurdles .

The 400-meter hurdle runner Carter is trained by former world class runner Antonio Pettigrew and had his international breakthrough in 2000 when he qualified third in the US trials for the Sydney Olympic Games . In Sydney he made it to the final and finished fourth. In 2001 he was again third in the US Trials for the World Athletics Championships in Edmonton . In Edmonton, however, he did not get past the semi-finals.

In 2002 he finally moved up to the top of the world. He became American champion and was placed as the third best runner in the world in the same year. After setbacks in 2003, he came again as US champion to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. However, he could not fulfill his dream of an Olympic medal again and finished fourth. In 2005 it seemed to be difficult again for him as new young runners came into the spotlight. The favorites for the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki were 19-year-old Kerron Clement and Bershawn Jackson , who were both ahead of him at the US Championships. However, Clement failed because of his inexperience, and Carter eventually won the silver medal. He ran a new personal best of 47.43 s in the Helsinki final.

At the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, he finished fourth.

James Carter has a competition weight of 77 kg with a height of 1.86 m.
