Lilium catesbaei , also pine lily or leopard lily , is a species from the genus of lilies ( Lilium ) in the Pseudolirium sectionnamedafter the English artist Mark Catesby (1679–1749).

description

Lilium catesbaei is a perennial , herbaceous plant and reaches a height of up to 90 centimeters. The egg-shaped onion reaches a height of 1.6 to 2.5 centimeters and a width of 1.3 to 2.4 centimeters, the ratio of height to width varies between 0.8 and 1.6 to 1. The few scales are loose, unsegmented or divided into two segments, the longest of them reach lengths of 1 to 1.8 centimeters.

The stem is slender, with numerous stem roots at its base between the tip of the onion and the surface of the earth. The distributed, almost upright, almost upright foliage leaves are narrowly elliptical, occasionally linear or slightly inverted-lanceolate. They are between 1.8 cm and 8.2 cm long and 0.2 to 1.2 cm wide, the ratio of length to width varies between 3.1 and 10.5 to 1. The leaves are entire and tapering.

The plants usually form terminal, upright single flowers , but occasionally also umbels with up to three flowers, flowering time is from July to September. The six identical bloom bracts (tepals) are bent back, the bend is actually stronger than 90 ° and points back. The color of the flowers is orange towards the tips and yellowish with purple dots towards the center. There are six stamens per flower. The filaments lie parallel and are often purple at the base. The anthers are brown-green, the pollen dark orange. Each flower has three carpels. The stamp is green. The individual flowers reach a diameter of 7.5 to 15 cm.

The seeds ripen in seed capsules that are toothed on the edge of the valve until October . The seeds are, unique to lilies, light-germinating and germinate immediately and epigeously after 35 days.

distribution

The plant is very rare. It is found in central Florida and on the Alabama coast , less often in Virginia , Mississippi and Louisiana .

Lilium catesbaei needs a moist to wet and extremely acidic soil ( pH value from 5.1 to 6.5), you can find it in pine forests and in open places in humid savannas . She needs direct sunlight and appreciates high temperatures, conditions that most other species of lily avoid.
