James Dundas Harford

Sir James Dundas Harford KBE CMG ( January 7, 1899 - November 26, 1993 ) was a British diplomat who is known for his service as Governor of Saint Helena from 1954 to 1958.

Life

A direct descendant of John Scandrett Harford at Blaise Castle , he was educated at Repton School and Balliol College , Oxford . Before studying, he took part in the First World War as a second lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion Essex Regiment and was deployed in France from 1917 to 1918 . After graduation, he first took a position as a school master at Eton College (1922-1926) before he joined the Colonial Administration Service and was initially posted to a post in Nigeria (1926-1934).

Honors

He received the Order of St Michael and St George (Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George) in 1943 and in 1956 the Order of the British Empire (Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire).

The Harford Middle School in Saint Helena is named after him.

family

Harford was married twice:

  1. March 14, 1932, Countess Thelma Alberta Louisa Evelyne Metaxà († October 22, 1934), sister of the 9th Count Metaxà , and only daughter of Count Andrea Francis Albert Cochrane Metaxà RNR ; with her he had a son.
  2. February 20, 1937, Lilias Madeline († December 9, 2006), eldest daughter of Major Archibald Campbell AEC ; with her he had two daughters.
