James Earl Rudder (born May 6, 1910 in Eden , Texas , † March 23, 1970 in Houston , Texas) was Major General of the United States Army , Land Commissioner of Texas and President of Texas A&M University .

Rudder became famous during World War II . There he took the Pointe du Hoc in Normandy with a ranger battalion as part of Operation Neptune on the morning of June 6, 1944 .

He later held various political offices in Texas. He was, among other things, Land Commissioner and from 1946 to 1952 mayor of Brady . He became President of Texas A&M University in 1959 and President of the entire Texas A&M University System in 1965 .
