James FP Gomez

James Furmose Peter Gomez (born June 29, 1946 in Bathurst ) is a politician in the West African state of Gambia . Since February 2017 he has been Minister of Fisheries, Water Resources and National Assembly Matters in the Adama Barrow cabinet .

Life

Gomez holds a bachelor's degree in human sciences from Springfield College in Massachusetts, USA, and an honorary doctorate from Agape International Christian Theological Seminary . He began his teaching career and later was a librarian for the Gambia National Library . He was also involved in various urban and environmental development projects in the Gambia.

Gomez is involved in the People's Progressive Party (PPP). In the election for Mayor of Banjul on June 18, 1991 Gomez was re-elected to the Banjul City Council , the election was the first direct election. In this capacity he was a member of the Executive Committee of the World Conference of Mayors and was Executive Secretary of the Africa Alliance of YMCAs in Nairobi, Kenya (1995 to 2007) and in 1981 Nation General Secretary of The Gambia YMCA.

He was dismissed in 1994 after a coup after nine years in office, his office as Lord Mayor was taken by Antouman Saho . During his tenure as Lord Mayor of Banjul, he was instrumental in projects such as the Urban Management Development Project, the reconstruction of Albert Market and the Urban Environment Project.

On February 1, 2017, the newly elected President Adama Barrow appointed Gomez as minister to his cabinet. On March 15, 2019, Cabinet member Lamin N. Dibba , Minister of Agriculture, was dismissed from the cabinet following a minor reshuffle. Gomez took over the temporary supervision via the Ministry of Agriculture.
