Here he edited the Revue de Genève , organized the radical movement of November 22nd, 1841 and, when the same failed, the uprising of October 5-8, 1846, headed the provisional and subsequently the newly constituted government and championed it As envoy of Geneva at the Diet of 1847/48, the introduction of the American bicameral system into the new Swiss federal constitution was successful.

From 1846, only with the interruption of the electoral term from 1853 to 1855, the head of the Geneva government, he made a powerful contribution to transforming the old Calvinist Geneva into a modern cosmopolitan city by razing the fortifications, executing great public buildings, etc. but his by no means impeccable private life and his dictatorial rule aroused displeasure, so that in 1861 and 1863 he was no longer elected to the State Council.
