James G. Oldroyd

James Gardner Oldroyd (born April 1921 in Bradford ; † November 22, 1982 ) was a British applied mathematician and engineer (theoretical rheology ).

Oldroyd attended Bradford Grammar School (which he graduated at the age of 14 but had to attend another four years because he could not study at his age) and from 1939 studied at Cambridge University (Trinity College) with a bachelor's degree. As a student, he won the Rouse Ball Prize in 1941 and the Mayhew Prize in 1942. During World War II he worked for the Ministry of Supply in Aberporth on the coast of Wales in rocket research and was from 1945 in the research laboratories of Courtaulds in Maidenhead, a manufacturer of viscose fiber. There he worked closely with the experimental rheologists DJ Strawbridge and BA Toms. He published a number of influential papers, especially in 1950 a paper on the formulation of equations of state in rheology. He also dealt with emulsions (microrheology) and published on the plasticity of Bingham bodies and other models (part of his dissertation in Cambridge). In 1953 he was Treasurer (treasurer) of the 2nd International Congress of Rheology in Cambridge and in the same year he became professor of applied mathematics at the University of Wales in Swansea, from 1957 as head of the applied mathematics department. In 1965 he became a professor at the University of Liverpool, where he became head of the department of applied mathematics and theoretical physics in 1973. He died suddenly and without warning on the way to university.

He received the Adams Prize in Cambridge in 1964 and the gold medal of the British Society of Rheology in 1984.

In 1946 he married Kathryn Evans and had three sons with her.
