James Henry Oliver

James Henry Oliver (born April 26, 1905 in New York City , † April 3, 1981 in Baltimore ) was an American ancient historian and epigraphist.

Life

He received a BA and PhD from Yale University (1926, 1931). At Yale he studied with George Lincoln Hendrickson and Michael Rostovtzeff . He attended the University of Bonn in 1927–1928 and the American Academy in Rome in 1928–1930. From 1932 to 1936 he excavated the Athens agora and acted as epigraphist for the excavations. He taught as Professor of Classics at Johns Hopkins University from 1946 to 1970.

His main interest and the subject of many publications was the Roman government of the provinces.
