James Halyburton of Pitcur and Firth (* after 1707; † May 10, 1765 ) was a Scottish - British politician .

Life

He was the only son and heir of the politician James Halyburton , landlord of Pitcur in Forfarshire. Although his father is said to have died as early as 1742/43 according to family records, his lands in Pitcur, including Hallyburton House , were not transferred to him as his heir in July 1755 .

He began a military career in 1735 as an infantry officer in the British Army and rose to the rank of colonel by 1755 .

With the help of his brother-in-law, James Douglas, 14th Earl of Morton , who was temporarily in possession of the Orkney and Shetland archipelagos , Halyburton was elected to the British parliamentary elections in 1747 as the successor to Robert Douglas, who had died two years earlier, in the constituency of Orkney and Shetland . He won the mandate and represented the constituency in the British House of Commons until 1754 . He was succeeded by Sir James Douglas, 1st Baronet . On Orkney he bought the Firth estate near Finstown .

His marriage to Anne Burnet in December 1735 remained childless. When he died in 1765 with no heirs, his great-nephew Hamilton Halyburton Douglas inherited his estate.
