James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Arran
James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Arran ( 1475 - 1529 at Kinneil House ) was a Scottish nobleman .
James was a son of James Hamilton, 1st Lord Hamilton , and his second wife, the Scottish Princess Mary . He played a prominent role in the disputes over reign after the death of Jacob IV , who had made him Earl of Arran on August 11, 1503 . In 1520 he was expelled from Edinburgh by the Douglas under the leadership of Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus , after a violent street fight.
After the death of the regent, John Stewart, 2nd Duke of Albany , in 1524, he allied himself with Queen Margaret to reign on behalf of the twelve-year-old Jacob V , but soon reconciled with Angus and had to flee Jacob's V share in the government.
The Earl first married Elizabeth in 1490, daughter of Alexander Home, 2nd Lord Home . This marriage had to be divorced in 1504, because Elizabeth's first husband, believed to be dead, reappeared. In his second marriage, Arran married Janet Bethune. With her he had the following children:
- Helen, ⚭ Archibald Campbell, 4th Earl of Argyll
- James , 2nd Earl of Arran
From his relationship with Beatrix, daughter of John Drummond, 1st Lord Drummond , he had two other children:
- Margaret, ⚭ Andrew Stewart, 1st Lord Stewart of Ochiltree
- John , Archbishop of St Andrews
