James Edward Hanson, Baron Hanson (born January 20, 1922 in Huddersfield , † November 1, 2004 in Newbury ) was a successful British entrepreneur .

James Hanson, son of a haulier, was raised to a life peer as Baron Hanson , of Edgerton, County of West Yorkshire , in 1983 . He bought companies , restructured them and sold some of them at a profit. He incorporated the rest into a growing conglomerate Hanson plc . The total value of its businesses has been estimated at approximately £ 11 billion. After the takeover of the tobacco company Imperial Tobacco , the billionaire's star began to decline in the early 1990s when the attempt to take over the chemical giant Imperial Chemical Industries failed. In Great Britain , Hanson excelled through generous party donations. He was a major supporter of Margaret Thatcher's Conservative Party and a strong opponent of the European Union .

For a short time, Hanson was engaged to Hollywood star Audrey Hepburn . Hanson became known under the nickname "Lord Geldsack".

Lord Hanson died at the age of 82 years of a cancer .
