Bulgaria map

The list of cities in Bulgaria provides an overview of the development of the population of the larger urban settlements and municipalities in the south-eastern European state of Bulgaria .

By far the largest agglomeration in Bulgaria is Sofia with a population of 1,228,282 (as of December 31, 2014). This means that 16.7% of the country's people live in the capital region.

Urban settlements by population

The following table contains:

  • the urban settlements with more than 20,000 inhabitants (as of 2007),
  • their names in German transcription
  • and in Bulgarian ,
  • the results of the population censuses (VZ)
    • dated December 4, 1985,
    • dated December 4, 1992
    • and from March 1, 2001,
  • and from the National Statistical Office in Bulgaria
    • an estimate for December 31, 2007
    • and a calculation for December 31, 2014

The district ( oblast ) to which the city belongs is also given. The population figures refer to the respective eponymous central urban settlement (in the sense of the Bulgarian statistical office) in the narrower sense - the core city - not to the city or municipality in the political sense, i.e. without any other localities that belong politically to the city.

The capitals of the districts are marked with *.
