Klissura in the western Rose Valley

Klissura ( Bulgarian : Клисура, Romanian Clisura, from Latin 'clausura') is a town with 1001 inhabitants (2005) in the municipality of Karlovo ( Plovdiv Oblast ) in central Bulgaria . The city is located approx. 70 km northwest of Plovdiv and approx. 90 km east of Sofia in the Rose Valley , at the foot of the Balkan Mountains and the Sredna Gora . The word klissura , originally derived from Greek, means “pass” or “gorge” in the South Slavic languages.

The Vejen, at 2198 m above sea level one of the highest mountains in the Balkan Mountains, is 8 km (as the crow flies) northwest of Klissura.

The Strjama flows through Klissura , a 110.1 km long river that rises on Vejen and flows into the Maritsa 15 km east of Plovdiv .

Klissura is on road no. 5 (= E 871), which leads 1 km north of Sofia to Kazanlak . The highway A1 runs south 70 km away.

The community is namesake for Klisura Peak , a mountain on Livingston Island in Antarctica.
