history
The name of the current city and its predecessor is derived from the name of the Slavic god Perun . Near the city are the remains of the medieval Bulgarian fortress Perestitsa, which was part of the southern fortifications of the Second Bulgarian Empire .
Between 1873 and 1875, when the Istanbul - Belovo railway line was being built, settlers from Perushtitsa and Brestovitsa, together with railway workers from Peschtera , founded a village north of the railway line, from which today's city of Stambolijski emerged.
In preparation for the Bulgarian April Uprising in 1876 , a revolutionary committee of the Internal Revolutionary Organization existed in Perushtitsa . During the uprising, the city was set on fire by the Ottoman-Turkish militants Başı Bozuk and Circassians , and the population was murdered or expelled. A memorial in memory of the uprising is located south of the city on Vlasovets Hill.
