Life

Wolf von Schönberg initially fought in the army of the Ernestine Elector Johann Friedrich the Steadfast outside of Saxony, achieved the rank of colonel and, as Field Marshal General, took over the supreme command of the Electoral Saxon army during the Schmalkaldic War in 1546/47. On April 24, 1547 he suffered a serious leg injury in the battle of Mühlberg , so that Hans von Ponickau had to replace him as commander in chief.

In 1547 Schönberg entered the service of the Albertine Elector Moritz. He acted as bailiff in Chemnitz, fought in the rank of field marshal in the battle of Sievershausen in 1553 and was appointed court marshal in Dresden in 1554. From 1557 until his death in 1584 he was the first chief miner of the Ore Mountains in Freiberg.

In the period from 1557 to 1761, the von Schönberg family provided eleven chief miners or miners. They were subordinate to the Erzgebirge district as well as the Oberbergamt founded in 1542 and the Oberhüttenamt founded in 1535 and later incorporated into the Oberbergamt. The Oberbergamt was the middle Saxon mining authority and the highest technical supervisory authority. Thus the Schönbergs controlled the entire Saxon mining industry. The "Lord of the Ore Mountains" Wolf von Schönberg also had excellent economic relations with Elector August and Electress Anna .

In 1567 Schönberg took part in the expedition of Elector August to enforce the imperial ban against the Ernestine Duke Johann Friedrich the Middle and in the siege of Gotha (see: Grumbachsche Handel ).
