Kotscherinowo ( Bulgarian Кочериново ) is a city in western Bulgaria , in the district / Oblast Kyustendil . Although Kotscherinowo is only 8 km north of Blagoevgrad , it does not belong to the district / Oblast Blagoewgrad , but to the district / Oblast Kyustendil. Kotscherinowo is the administrative center of the municipality of the same name Kotscherinowo .

The city of Kocherinovo is 90 km south of the capital Sofia , on the road that leads to the Rila Monastery and 2 km east of the European route 79 (Sofia - Thessaloniki ). Nearby run two rivers - the flowing north-south direction Struma and the east of the Rila coming Rila , which flows about 2.5 km southwest of the town center in the Struma. The village of Stob with the pyramids of Stob is located three kilometers northeast of Kotscherinowo .

The name of the place was first mentioned in 1878. In 1974 Kochinovo was declared a town. The root of the place name is "Kotscher" (Bulgar. "Кочер"), German for shed / shed / pigsty. Similar place names with this root are:

economy

Until a few years ago, tobacco cultivation was the main source of income for the people of Kocherinovo. A large number of residents also worked in the "Nikola Wapzarow" paper and packaging plant, which, however, ceased operations after it was returned. Now there is a sewing shop, a briquette factory and a pastry shop.

Personalities

The poet and communist Nikola Wapzarow (1909–1942) worked in the 1930s as a stoker and later as a mechanic in the "Bulgarische Forstindustrie AG" factory. In 1936 he was released.
