Alfatar ( Bulgarian : Алфатар) is a city in northeastern Bulgaria . The city is located in Silistra Oblast , near the city of Silistra , and has 1,478 inhabitants.
history
Alfatar was an old, small, Bulgarian village, which was mentioned in 1573 during the Russo-Turkish War . After the Treaty of Peace of Küçük Kaynarca in 1774, part of the population left the village due to poor conditions and social problems and fled to the Ukraine , to the nearby village of Olshanka. After the Russo-Turkish War of 1828 and 1829 , many immigrants from Sliven Oblast and Yambol Oblast settled in Alfatar. After the liberation from Turkish slavery, the population increased until 2039, when Alfatar became one of the largest villages in Dobruja .
When the Balkan War broke out in 1912, many volunteer men from Alfatar went to war, according to the Macedonia-Adrianople Volunteer Corps .
After the Peace of Bucharest , many villages were under Romanian influence. The population protested against this attitude and demanded immediate freedom and independence. In Dobruja a revolutionary organization and many workers' movements emerged which protested strongly in Romania . In 1940 the Tsarist Bulgaria got some territories back after the Kraiova Treaty.
Between 1942 and 1943, Alfatar was renamed Lazarova General , but then got its current name back. The population was very active in the field of agriculture , which means that numerous steam mills and windmills can still be seen today. In 1974, Alfatar was named a city.
The city has given its name to the Alfatar Peninsula of Robert Island in Antarctica since 2008 .
