James Jones (born November 6, 1921 in Robinson , Illinois , † May 9, 1977 in Southampton , Long Island , New York ) was an American writer .

biography

During the Second World War , he saw the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Guadalcanal as a soldier. The attack on Pearl Harbor forms the framework of the novel Doomed in All Eternity , the battle for Guadalcanal is portrayed in Island of the Damned . This book was filmed under the title The Narrow Ridge . The aftermath of the war is finally treated in the 1979 posthumously published novel The Homecoming of the Damned . Jones could not complete this last part of the trilogy, at his death almost 31 of the 34 chapters were available. Following the author's written notes and tapes, the manuscript was completed by Willie Morris , as James Jones intended. All three novels are linked by depicting similar characters, so that an overall picture of the Pacific War emerges.

James Jones was married to the actress Gloria Mosolino (1928-2006). Kaylie Jones (* 1960), the daughter, published an autobiographical novel in 1990 about the life of the family in Paris. A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries (1998), dt. The time of youth (1999), was filmed by James Ivory , Kris Kristofferson played the Father.
