James L. Day

James L. Day ( October 5, 1925 - October 28, 1998 in Cathedral City , California ) was an American soldier in the US Marines . It was in 1998 with the Medal of Honor for his service in the Battle of Okinawa excellent and had last the rank of Major General (Major General) held.

career

James L. Day served in the Eastern Theater of War during World War II . On May 14, 1945, as a 19-year-old corporal, he and his unit took a position in a crater on Sugar Loaf in Okinawa . He held this position for three days, finally injured and alone. 50 years later he was awarded the Medal of Honor for this by President Bill Clinton . James L. Day commanded units in the Korean War and the Vietnam War . Most recently he held the rank of major general.

After retiring from the military, he worked at the National University in Palm Springs, California .

Honors

James L. Day was awarded the Medal of Honor, three times the Silver Star , once the Bronze Star and six times the Purple Heart .

The James L. Day Middle School in Temecula bears his name.
